Therapy sessions are a safe place to work through problems in a relaxed, comfortable setting. Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, usually requires many visits to work through problems, so don’t expect any instant solutions to your problems during the first day. Therapy will give you life-long tools to deal with problems, and it’s not a “quick fix.”
Our sessions are 50 mins each. Modalities used within the clinic include:
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
- Behavioural Analysis
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Sometimes other modalities require more than 50 minutes. This will need to be organised in advance. The work is based on individual assessment and formulation and that formulation is revisited regularly. Basically, every patient will have a unique treatment plan to meet their needs, their goals and focus on the implementation of their own values into actions.
All of our therapists are trained and registered with appropriate bodies (AHPRA predominately). Engagement is based on Rogerian principles of unconditional acceptance of the person.
During your first session, your therapist will ask you:
- Why have you decided to come to therapy?
- What do you feel could improve in your life?
- What symptoms do you experience?
We will talk about your history, including your childhood, education, relationships, your current career and living situation. A good way to consider this process is that we are building a map of you and your life context. Your first session with the therapist will be different from following visits. The first visit is a period for you and your therapist to meet, grow comfortable with one another and get an idea of how to proceed. You’ll be able to see if your therapist is a good fit. During future visits, you’ll be able to begin working through problems and developing strategies.
You and your therapist will come to an agreement about:
- The frequency of your sessions
- The modalities to be used
- The ins and outs of patient confidentiality
When the therapist finishes, they will ask you if have any questions. After all Therapy is a collaborative process – something that we engage in together rather than something that is done to you.
